Support Materials

The Support Materials offer teachers opportunities to reflect on their motivational style and teaching stances and their capacity to motivate all children. The pack looks at barriers to engagement in learning both within the learner and within the classroom climate to help generate effective strategies. The pack also provides a set of lenses that go beyond the traditional variables of ability and behaviour to achieve a better focus on how children develop and engage in life long learning.

The materials are designed to provide a structured in service training programme and can also be used for individual, departmental or whole school self evaluations, to support consultancy and peer mentoring opportunities as well as action research projects. The modules could be used to support specific school based projects, working groups and policy reviews looking at, for example, school ethos, discipline, consistency and competition.

The materials offer approximately 80 hours of training. However, the core ideas would require 6 to 8 hours, for example two half day sessions. The training can be customized to be delivered in half day or one day programme. The pack includes an overview of the materials, leader guides to the staff development activities, activity papers, information papers, teacher self-evaluation papers, whole school self-evaluation papers, pupil assessment papers and pupil self-evaluation papers, and powerpoint presentation slides.

The ideas can be accessed at different levels of detail. The model is best built up organically in a way that draws participants into the thinking. It is best to present the ‘big picture’ initially and follow up with the consolidation materials and optional modules.
