Renfrew High School Pilot

Summary Aims and Objectives

In Renfrew High School, we aim to use the pilot project to:

·         familiarise ourselves with the materials by working with them
·         assess the best method of rolling out the materials to the staff of the school
·         pilot the use of ‘stancing’
·         pilot the use of various hooks’ with groups of pupils

Two classes will be ‘stanced’. Based on the results of this, one class will be chosen in which there are at least two groups of pupils, who are not yet ‘harmoniously engaging’ in the Modern Languages class.
Working with a colleague who will adopt the role of co-op teacher / observer / research assistant, the class teacher will use the various “hooks” to attempt to create the conditions for a move of “stance” by the pupils in the two groups.

The evaluation of the impact of the pilot will begin with an initial questionnaire to analyse the pupils’ views on their motivation with regard to Modern Languages. All pupils in the class will be offered the opportunity to complete the questionnaire. The class teacher of the pupil’s motivation and engagement will follow this with an interim analysis using descriptive observations.
Finally a post-pilot analysis will be completed using the same questionnaires to analyse the pupils’ motivation with regard to Modern Languages. All pupils in the class will be offered the opportunity to complete the questionnaire.

Additionally pupils’ views will be sought by questionnaire of the methods and approaches used during the project. Again, all pupils in the class will be offered the opportunity to complete the questionnaire.
The class teacher will be interviewed by a neutral observer to elicit her views on the impact of the materials on the pupils in her class.
