Kersland School
Renfrewshire Motivated Schools Initiative
Kersland School Pilot Summary
Kersland School is a school for children and young people who have severe learning difficulties. We were interested in using the Motivated Schools support materials to promote positive behaviour within the context of a whole school reward scheme.
We hope to witness a reduction in incidents of negative behaviour during outings and within school. We also hope to see an increase in positive behaviour and attitudes that will in turn help to contribute towards a more motivating classroom and overall school environment. This would be achieved by introducing an award system focusing on rewarding positive elements of behaviour, pupil work and achievement, ultimately aiming to raise pupil self esteem through the stancing of pupils in one class and the adopting/adapting teaching hooks from TMS support materials pack.
The evaluation of the pilot will include semi-structured interviews with staff in Room 6 and will also include a questionnaire that uses scaled questions. The questionnaire aspect of the evaluation will be quantitative, as members of staff will complete a questionnaire containing the same scaled questions before and after the pilot study. This will help in clearly identifying changes in staff experience of negative incidents of behaviour. The qualitative aspect of the evaluation will be collated via a semi-structured interview that will be before and after the pilot study period. We also intend to involve the parents of Room 6 pupils in our evaluation process.
